New @ Suntrek

There is a change at Suntrek, after all… Ford Motor Corp has decided to reduce the weight allowance on the rooftop. As a result, it was not possible for Suntrek (and trekamerica) to go on like it used to be. So, from this year on, no more rooftop, but a trailer instead! Look at it (photo Valerie Soetens)

Suntrek experience: Universal studios

In september 06, we visited Universal studios. And as you heard and saw this WE, Universal was on fire. Here are 2 pics of the Back to the Future set, which was destroyed this WE.

Back to the future set, Universal studios

On the following video, you can see the result of the fire; what remains of the set. This is a CNN Ireport.

Am i going to Chicago?

In fact the answer is: yes. Transamerica will drive me there. But i have to say i’m not sure what to expect. The last couple of days, Chicago has made the headlines for violent crimes, shootings and so on. Look at this:

Five dead in South Side shooting

In Chicago, fears of a long, bloody summer

32 people shot, 6 killed, in violent Chicago weekend

I think we are not going at the “hot spots”, but still. It underlines one of the many problems american society is facing: gang violence. And for Chicago, at the moment, it’s a really bad story.

Atlanta tornado: flashback

I was surprised this afternoon. While surfing on various websites, i saw that a tornado touched down in Atlanta last night. Something you don’t really expect in a big city! I was there in 2005 (2 and 1/2 years ago already…), and to see all the damage is quite disturbing.

Here’s one of my 2005 pics

Why suntrek?

Suntrek Adventure Tours

Good question, isn’t it? My answers:

Suntrek, because it’s relatively cheap

Suntrek, because you can meet other people, coming from all over the world

Suntrek, because you don’t have to care about anything but enjoying the trip: no car, no parking problem, no tickets, no gas, no itinerary , etc…

Suntrek, because it offers more tours than trek america (in my opinion)

Suntrek, because it’s fresh, dynamic and experienced

Suntrek, because it’s flexible: you can ask for stops, things to see, etc…

All this explains my choice. And the reasons behind the upcoming 3rd experience!

Salt Lake City – Bonneville: Salt Flats

Another tip about this year tour: we are going to Salt Lake City; i also hope to stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats. If you don’t know what i’m talking about, let’s have a look!

So, now you…know. I also have to say that i’m a big fan of motorsports. Landscape, speedcars, same place. Interesting for me. Here’s the JCB diesel at Bonneville!

Yosemite: Half dome trail

Yosemite half dome seen from Glacier Point

I discovered Yosemite in 2006. We got there through Tioga Pass and made a short walk in the sequoias. On our second day, we did the panorama trail, 8 miles long. My trek leader, Aaron, asked us if we would be ready to try to reach Half dome. We weren’t… At that time, i didn’t regret it, but now… I just have to wait, and see if i can go back there. Hope i will, because it’s really great hikin there!

Most original campground

This one was my first camp night in USA. Back in 2005, tour starting in Miami. It was Swingin East… We were camping somewhere close to Homestead. It had rained that day, so it was really wet out there. But in Florida, in the summer, wet also means.. Hot. So, we decided to sleep on the tables. Not really comfortable, but… very interesting first experience!

Best campgrounds

Ok, 2 suntrek tours, a lot of campground. Here’s my top 3. I have always been attracted by big american cities, but suntrek allowed me to taste National Parks, and lots of places outside city limits. So, enough talk…

3rd place on the podium is Mather’s campground in Grand Canyon. Very close, in GC NP, large & quiet camp area.

2nd place goes to Boyd’s campground in Key West. Again, just outside city limits, close to the sea, hot, windy…Just a cool one!

And the gold medal goes to…. Monument Valley with it’s Mitten view campground. Just have a look at the pic, it speaks for itself!

Another one: Niagara Falls

As i keep thinking about the tour, i have to look at Niagara Falls. Lot’s of films taped there, some crazy stunts, some close calls aswell. Look at this one:

But i’d rather look at the falls this way:

So, New york, Niagara Falls, Yellowstone. What’s next?
